Josef Altmann is a professor for software engineering at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, since 2005. From 1999 to 2005, he headed the Department of Software Technology at the Software Competence Center Hagenberg, a research company in the field of information and communication technology. In this activity, he was responsible for application-oriented contract research and system development based on newest findings. His major work subjects include software architectures, data engineering, and software system testing. Since 1991, he has been a lecturer at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and a coach and consultant for the practice.

Gerhard Austaller studied informatics at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria, from 1993 to 1999. After two additional years as a contract assistant, he took on the position of a research assistant at the Telecooperation department with the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. In this position, he mainly deals with distributed programming based on services oriented architectures and context-aware applications.

Nitin Arora holds a five year integrated Master of Technology degree in Mathematics and Computing, from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (May 2003) India. He is currently working as a Software Developer in the Knowledge Information Systems Group at Salzburg Research. He was previously working in India as an Associate Technology with Sapient Corporation which is a leading IT Consulting company. In addition to this he has considerable work experience working as a student intern at EPFL Switzerland and at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His final year project was in the area of Computer Networks at IBM India Research, Delhi. He is currently doing research as part of the European Research project METOKIS developing middleware for knowledge sharing and visualization tools for application domains.


Wernher Behrendt

Wernher Behrendt studied Geography and English linguistics at Graz, Austria, and began dedicating himself to informatics in the eighties. After his MSc in Cognitive Science (Manchester, 1989), he worked as a research associate in the Knowledge Engineering Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, and in 1995, moved to the Computer Science Department at the University of Cardiff, where he worked on the application of logic programming for translation between heterogeneous database systems. Since 2000, he has been a senior researcher with Salzburg Research, dealing with the interoperation of heterogeneous information systems and the combination of multimedia and knowledge based systems. One of his interests in this field is the development of content models that can be linked with ontologies to create a basis for "intelligent tools for knowledge workers".

Arno Ebner attended the "Skigymnasium" in Stams/Austria as he was also a member of the Austrian national ski team. After his sports career he changed to the tourism industry. During that time Ebner gained a lot of experience working for non-profit as well as profit organizations; he was Director of international marketing at the Tyrolean tourist board, Austria. In 1991 he founded the e-commerce company "Tiscover AG Travel Information System" in Tyrol, Austria. Being first Managing Director and later the CEO of the company, he gained broad experience in online marketing and e-commerce. In 2003 he passed the "Top Executive Program" at the Management Zentrum St. Gallen, Switzerland. Since August 2003 he has been responsible for the B2C activities of Swarovski, the worldwide leading brand of cut crystal, based in Zürich/Feldmeilen, Switzerland. He is Managing Director of Swarovski Crystal Online AG and Director of E-Business (B2C).

Christian Eichinger has been working as a software architect with Salzburg Research, Austria, since 1999. In this activity, he has acquired extensive experience in the design and implementation of architectures for Web applications. His professional interest extends from software architectures over design patterns to the implementation of software systems. He has collected practical experiences in the use of Web technologies (e.g., Java 2 Enterprise Edition, Cocoon) in a large number of projects. He has conveyed this rich experience in numerous training programs and within the scope of his teaching activities at the University of Applied Sciences of Salzburg, Austria. Since 2003, he is assistant at the Institute of Business Informatics - Data & Knowledge Engineering at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. His research interest is the specialization of Web Application Models.

Gregor Engels got his PhD in Computer Science in 1986 from the University of Osnabrück (Germany). He has the chair for information systems at the University of Paderborn since 1997 and is currently leading a group of about 15 researchers. Between 1991 and 1997 he had the chair for software engineering at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands). His research interests are in the field of visual languages, object-oriented modeling techniques (around UML), software process models, software development environments and tools, graph transformation, and applications thereof to the development of web-based, multimedia, or embedded systems. Prof. Engels has published more than 140 articles in journals, books, and international conferences.

Martin Gaedke is a scientific assistant with the Institute for Telematics at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), Germany. He is also responsible for consulting activities at the Telecooperation Office, a third-party funded know-how transfer group. He is Managing Editor of the Journal of Web Engineering (JWE), member of the editorial boards of Journals on eLearning and Web Information Systems, and has published his work in international conferences, journals, and books. Within his scientific activities, he was a program co-chair of the 5th International Conference on Web Engineering and chaired the Web Engineering track of the International World Wide Web Conference from 2002 to 2004. His research interest focuses on Web engineering, software engineering, distributed systems, software and system architecture, as well as federation and reuse as principles for software. He obtained his MSc in computer science in 1997, and a doctoral degree in engineering, in 2000, both from the University of Karlsruhe.

Paul Grünbacher is an Associate Professor at Johannes Kepler University Linz and a research associate at the Center for Software Engineering (University of Southern California, Los Angeles). He received his M.Sc. (1992) and PhD. Degrees (1996) from the University of Linz. In 1999 Paul received the Erwin-Schrödinger research scholarship and worked as a visiting professor at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. At the Center for Software Engineering (headed by Barry W. Boehm) he developed EasyWinWin, a groupware-supported approach for software requirements negotiation. In 2001 Paul received his Habilitation degree (Venia Docendi in Angewandte Informatik) for this work on software requirements negotiation. His research focuses on applying collaborative technologies to support and automate complex software and system engineering activities such as requirements negotiation or software inspections. He is a member of ACM, ACM SIGSOFT, the IEEE, and the Austrian Computer Society.


Andreas Hartl

Andreas Hartl studied computer science between 1995 and 2001 at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. His master's thesis was on adapting network centric applications to mobile devices. Since 2001 he is doing a Ph.D. study at the Telecooperation department of the Darmstadt University of Technology where he researches on multimodal and multi-device user interfaces.

Martin Hitz: attained his MSc (Dipl.-Ing.) and PhD in computer science from the Technical University of Vienna, Austria, and received his venia docendi from the University of Vienna in 1996. After research appointments at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and visiting professorships at the University of Linz and at the Carinthian Polytechnic Institute in Klagenfurt (Austria), he has been a full professor for interactive systems at the University of Klagenfurt since 2000. Currently, he is also the Vice Rector for Research and Development of his university. His current work includes human computer interaction, e-learning systems, software engineering, and context-dependent information systems. In addition to his research and lecture activities, he has conducted many development projects with the industry. Together with Gerhard Leitner and Rudolf Melcher, he is currently active as a consultant for usability issues with special focus on Web usability and the usability of mobile devices.

Gerti Kappel has been a full professor for business informatics at the Vienna University of Technology since 2001. Prior to that, she was a full professor for computer science at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. She attained her MSc and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology in 1984 and 1987, respectively. From 1987 to 1989, she was a visiting researcher at the Centre Universitaire d'Informatique in Geneva, Switzerland. Her current research interests include object-oriented modeling, database/Web integration, ubiquitous Web technologies, Web engineering, and workflow management and e?commerce applications. She has been involved in national and international projects conducted jointly by universities and the industry, and projects sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture, and the EU. She is a member of ACM, IEEE, GI, and OCG, a co-author of the book "UML@Work-From Analysis to Implementation", and a scientific consultant to many industrial projects.


Alfons Kemper

Alfons Kemper studied Computer Science at the University of Dortmund from 1977 - 1980 and, thereafter at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA, from 1980 to 1984. He completed his M.Sc. in 1981 and his Ph. D. in 1984, both at USC. From 1984 until 1991 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1991 he became Associate Professor at the RWTH Technical University Aachen, Germany. From 1993 until 2004 he was a Full Professor for Database Systems at the University of Passau, Germany. Starting in 2004 he holds the Chair for Computer Science with emphasis on Database Systems at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany. His research interests are in the realization of highly scalable, distributed database systems, query optimization and dynamic information fusion of Internet data sources to cope with the ever growing data explosion using automated analysis and query processing techniques. Beside numerous international research publications he is the author of the market leading German database textbook, which is available in its sixth edition by Oldenbourg-Verlag.

Nora Koch received degrees in Computer Science at the University of Buenos Aires in 1974 and 1985, and her PhD degree in Computer Science from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) of Munich in 2000. She is a research assistant at the LMU since 1995 and works as a consultant at F.A.S.T. Applied Software Technology GmbH since 1998. Nora has been involved in several national and European projects. She is a member of the Web Engineering Group at the LMU, responsible for the development of the UWE methodology. Her main research interests focus on methods for the development of Web applications, customization, meta-modeling and model-driven Web engineering. Also, she participated in the development of SmexWeb, an adaptive Web-based training system, and ArgoUWE, a CASE tool supporting the UWE approach. Nora organized the 4th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE 2004) in Munich and is a member of the IEEE and the German Society of Informatics. Gabriele Kotsis

Gabriele Kotsis received her masters degree (1991, honored with the Award of the Austrian Computer Society), her PhD (1995, honored with the Heinz-Zemanek Preis) and the venia docendi in computer science (2000) from the University of Vienna. She was working as a researcher and teacher at the University of Vienna (1991-2001), at the Vienna University for Economics and Business Administration (2001) and at the Copenhagen Business School (2002). Since December 2002 she is holding a full professor position at the Telecooperation Department at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. Her research interests include performance management of computer systems and networks, workgroup computing, mobile and internet computing, telemedia and telecooperation. Prof. Kotsis is author of numerous publications in international conferences and journals and is co-editor of several books. Since April 2003 she is president of the Austrian Computer Society.

Markus Lauff is a director of the SAP Research research program office with SAP AG. His tasks include the consultation of SAP architecture groups, the alignment of the research activities, and the support for the transfer of research results into solution management and development groups of SAP. He attained his PhD (Dr.-Ing.) and MSc (Dipl.-Inform.) degrees in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe in 2001 and 1994, respectively. Since the winter semester 2002/03, he receives a lectureship for Web engineering lectures with the University of Darmstadt, Germany. He is a member of ACM and IEEE. His research interest is the software engineering process for business applications, with particular focus on mobile, multi-modal applications, integration of context information, and scalable adaptation infrastructures.


Gerhard Leitner

Gerhard Leitner studied psychology in Vienna, Austria. During his studies, he dealt with the field of human computer interaction both within his research work and on jobs he had taken during and after his studies. From 1997 to 1999, he worked as a scientific employee with the CURE (Center for Usability Research and Engineering) research group in the Institute for Applied Informatics and Information Systems at the University of Vienna. From 2000 to 2001, he was a usability engineer in a German e?business group of companies, where he was responsible for the usability agendas of the entire corporation. Since 2001, he has been a university assistant with the Interactive Systems research group of the Department of Informatics Systems, University of Klagenfurt, Austria. His main subjects include usability, cognitive ergonomics, and modern interaction mechanisms that take human information processing aspects into account.

Marc Lohmann graduated in computer science in 2001 at the University of Paderborn, Germany. Since then, he holds a position as research and teaching associate at the University of Paderborn in the "database and information systems" workgroup of Professor Dr. Gregor Engels. He has been working in the "Multimedia in Software Technology (MuSofT)" project and other projects, where he deals with the possibilities of managing learning objects by means of meta-data in a Web-based portal. His core research areas are processes and methodologies to model and develop interactive Web applications and in particular Web services with visual modeling languages, e.g. UML. Within the scope of this work, he deals intensively with different Web-based standards. He has published multiple works on international conferences and journals, and already held several industrial seminars.

Fernando Lyardet obtained his MSc in informatics from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), Argentina, where he then worked first as a software developer and as a research assistant at the LIFIA lab until August 2002. In September 2002 he joined the Telecooperation group as a research assistant at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. Since April 2005, his is also a research associate at SAP Research in Darmstadt. His research interests include web application modeling with objects and patterns, object orientation, application frameworks, context awareness and ubiquitous computing.

Rudolf Melcher

Rudolf Melcher studied business informatics at the University of Vienna, Austria, where he specialized in ergonomics and human computer interaction. From 1998 to 2003, Rudolf worked as usability researcher and consultant for the Center of Usability Research and Engineering (CURE). In his research he focused on usability issues of mobile computing and interaction paradigms for virtual environments. As a consultant, he primarily reviewed large Websites and developed conceptual designs. After this period, Rudolf realized interactive media projects as self-employee. This allowed him to explore potentials of mixed environments in a creative an experimental manner. In 2005, Rudolf joined the University of Klagenfurt as research assistant and usability consultant, now focusing on usability issues of net-based interactive systems and mixed realities.

Max Mühlhäuser is a professor of computer science at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, where he heads the field of Telecooperation and the Computer Operation group, and a professor with the Information Technology Transfer Office (ITO). He lectures a graduate course on e-commerce and ubiquitous computing sponsored by the German Research Society (DFG). He is currently the dean of the Informatics Department and speaker of the ITO. He obtained his MSc from Karlsruhe, and headed a research center for Digital Equipment. Since 1989, he has worked as a professor or visiting professor at universities in Germany, Austria, France, Canada, and the United States. He has published about 150 articles, and written or edited books on computer-assisted authoring, learning environments, and multimedia software technology, and has patents pending on m commerce. He is a member of GI, ACM, and IEEE. His research interests include the development and runtime support for Internet applications, with special focus on mobile/ubiquitous computing, including m commerce and security aspects, e learning, distributed multimedia systems, continuous media, multi-modal interaction, hypertext, hypermedia, and the semantic Web.

Martin Nussbaumer joined the IT Management and Web Engineering Research Group in February 2001 after having graduated as MSc. in Computer Science in December 2000 at the Faculty for Informatics at the University of Karlsruhe. There he works as research staff member towards a PhD degree. His research interests focus on the areas application of component-based approaches on web applications, Aspect-Oriented Programming and Semantic Web Services. Current research concerns Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) in the context of information exchange in highly distributed environments.

Birgit Pröll studied computer science at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, where she obtained her MSc in 2001. Since 1991, she has been employed with the FAW (Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing) at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz. She has been engaged in industrial and research projects in the areas of expert systems and CAD, configuration management, relational and object-oriented databases, and information systems and e?commerce on the World Wide Web. From 1995 to 2000, she had managed the development of the Web-based tourism information systems TIS@WEB and TIScover at the FAW. In 2003, she received her habilitation (venia docendi) for applied computer science from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering of JKU. Her current research interests and fields of teaching comprise information retrieval, Web engineering, and e-commerce.

Rudolf Ramler is a senior software engineer and a member of the scientific staff at the Software Competence Center Hagenberg, Austria. His research interests include software testing, quality management, and Web engineering. He has led research projects on testing of Web-based systems and test management. His experience in software development comprises development of tools for test management, project portfolio management, and engineering of Web-based solutions. Rudolf works as a consultant in industry projects and is a lecturer at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences. He studied Business Informatics and holds a M.Sc. Siegfried Reich has been a scientific director of the Salzburg Research, a non-profit research organization, which provides support and scientific evaluation of application-oriented research in information and communication technologies (ICTs), focused on creating and managing digital content ("Digital Content Engineering"). He received his MSc in applied computer science from the University of Linz (1992) and a PhD in computer science and economics from the University of Vienna (1995). From 1996 to 1999, he worked as a lecturer with the Multimedia Research Group at Southampton, UK, mainly on open hypermedia system interoperability and the application of user trails for navigating information spaces. In these fields, he has published over 50 international papers, and has headed many conferences and workshops. He is a member of the Open Hypermedia Systems Working Group (OHSWG), ACM, IEEE, and the OCG (Austrian Computer Society). He has been involved in several European research projects, including EUROPUBLISHING (RACE 2042), MEMOIR (ESPRIT 22153), and CULTOS (IST 28134).

Werner Retschitzegger studied business informatics at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria. He attained his MSc (1991) and PhD (1996) degrees from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, and his habilitation (venia docendi) for applied computer science from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering of JKU. Wieland Schwinger is assistant professor at the Department of Telecooperation at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. Before that, he was a project manager for stategic research project in the area of ubiquitous Web applications at the Software Competence Center at Hagenberg. He studied business informatics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, and computer science at the University of Skövde, Sweden, and obtained his PhD on the subject ubiquitous Web application modeling in 2001. Stefan Seltzsam studied Computer Science at the University of Passau, Germany, from 1994 to 1999. After obtaining his diploma in 1999, he worked as a research associate with Prof. Alfons Kemper at the Chair for Database Systems at the University of Passau, Germany. In 2004, he moved to the Chair for Computer Science with emphasis on Database Systems at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany. There, he finished his dissertation on security, caching, and self-management in distributed information systems and obtained his doctorate in 2005. Since then, he works as postdoctoral research fellow with main focus on autonomic computing concepts for distributed information systems which are hiding the ever increasing complexity of managing IT infrastructures.

Christoph Steindl studied Computer Science and Mechatronics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, and was a university assistant with Professor Mössenböck at the Institute for Practical Computer Science, and obtained his PhD in 1999. He works as a senior IT architect and methodology expert with IBM Austria. As an IT architect, he is technically responsible for large-scale and complex customer projects. As a methodology expert, he helps select the appropriate approach for customer projects and adapt it to the project and the team. He holds training programs within IBM, and public seminars and lecture events at universities on various topics in the field of application development, including agile methods, testing, use case modeling, and architectural thinking.

Annika Wagner studied computer science at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, where she obtained her PhD in 1997. After that, she first joined the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, and then the University of Paderborn, Germany. Since 2003, she is working as a free software developer and consultant.


Hannes Werthner

Hannes Werthner is founder and chairman of the EC3 Competence Center in Vienna, Austria, and concurrently a professor of e-commerce at the Technical University of Vienna. Before that he was professor at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and the University of Trento, Italy, where he also headed the research laboratory for e-commerce and tourism at the ITC-irst (an extra-university research center). He studied informatics at the Technical University of Vienna. His research interests include decision-support systems, simulation, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce. He is an editor of the scientific journal "Information Technology and Tourism-Applications, Methodologies, Techniques". He was a member of the ISTAG Advisory Group for the IST research program of the EU, a group that advices the EU in shaping, planning and implementing this program.


Martin Wimmer

Martin Wimmer studied Computer Science at the University of Passau, Germany, where he obtained his diploma in 2003. Thereafter he worked as a scientific employee at the University of Passau and since April 2004 as a scientific employee at the chair for Database Systems at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany. Within the scope of his work, he deals with security for distributed Web service applications. The major focus thereby lies on the design and evaluation of authorization models for Web service choreographies and the integration of database systems through Web service interfaces.
